Mtoto News, an organization and digital and media platform to empower children to inform policy, programs, and practice through children’s voices, child-led and child-informed research, has joined the Datasphere Initiative as an in-kind project partner.

“Mtoto News has an incredible track record of engaging children in Africa and leveraging their voices through digital platforms to ensure that they are part of decision-making processes. Our visions and missions are aligned and having Mtoto News on board to collaborate as part of our #Youth4OurDataFuture project will surely expand the project’s impact and reshape the data economy for the better,” said Lorrayne Porciuncula, Executive Director, at Datasphere Initiative.

The Datasphere Initiative and Mtoto News plan to collaborate to expand the impact of the #Youth4OurDataFuture project. Mtoto News will join the #Data4Youth Advisory Group and advise on engagement mechanisms for youth, on the relevant issues from the data economy that are affecting youth, and leverage the project’s campaign to reach youth from different regions. Mtoto News has been engaging children through media campaigns, capacity-building training, and tools and content creation, and its contributions to the #Youth4Data Advisory Group will be invaluable to transforming the data economy.

This partnership will foster collaboration between the two organizations as they work to drive new and innovative ways to data governance and ensure youth’s voices are at the core of the discussions on the data economy.

“Children and young people are the number one generators of data, most of them generate data without their knowledge and that data is used without their consent. With the fast-evolving and growing technology in Africa, it is important for children and young people to have a say in how their data is used and governed. At Mtoto News we are glad to collaborate with the Datasphere Initiative to ensure African children’s voices are included in the data governance conversations,” said Jennifer Kaberi, Founder and CEO of Mtoto News.
