UN World Data Forum aimed to spur data innovation, nurture partnerships, mobilize high-level political and financial support for data, and build a pathway to better data for sustainable development. The forum was held from 24th to 27th April 2023 in a hybrid format from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in China.
Lorrayne Porciuncula, Executive Director of the Datasphere Initiative, was invited to speak in the session “New developments in governance of cross-border data flows: Data strategies and trade negotiations” on Tuesday, April 25th, 2023.
The panel aimed to discuss the new developments in the governance of cross-border data flows since the Digital Economy Report 2021-Cross-border flows and development: From whom the data flow was released by the UNCTAD in September 2021. It will also examine some crucial issues in governance of cross-border data flows and discuss possible solutions to them, such as the role that trade agreements can play in seeking creative approaches to compromises on data localization and whether new forms of global cooperation on data governance are required.
