Maíra Carvalho

Communications Lead

The Datasphere Initiative transforms complex data governance into shared global knowledge through research, policy sandboxes, and open learning resources. Its frameworks and narratives empower governments, industry, and civil society to unlock data for collective benefit.

Maíra Carvalho is the Communications Lead at the Datasphere Initiative. She is a communications strategist with 15 years of experience translating complex ideas into clear, high-impact narratives. She holds a BA in International Relations from the University of Brasília, bringing geopolitical and institutional fluency to her communications work. Maíra has built communications strategies for a wide range of organizations—including global tech firms, NGOs, cultural institutions, and independent creators. At Shopify Brazil, she developed the company’s local SEO strategy. At MASP, Brazil’s premier art museum, she launched its first e-commerce traffic and sales strategy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maíra co-created a nationwide science and health education initiative in partnership with an infectious disease doctor and professor. Designed as a public service during a moment of national crisis, the project combined digital strategy with accessible health content—via website, media coordination, YouTube, and viral WhatsApp campaigns. The effort earned the 2022 BRICS Special Contribution Award for Combatting COVID-19, presented in Beijing, China.

Her cross-sector, crisis-tested approach now supports the Datasphere Initiative’s mission to bring data governance into the global spotlight through narratives that inform, engage, and influence.
